Are you one of millions of people that have problems sleeping? Are you one of millions taking sleep medication? I am not telling you to stop, but I am telling you to take a look at the foods you eat. A food journal is the best way to look back and see what’s going on.
There was a study done by The Ameridcan Journal of Clinical Nutrition on insomnia in postmenopausal women and consuming refined carbohydrates. It’s been difficult to determine whether insomnia triggered eating or if eating refined carbs caused sleep problems. The study showed the release of insulin and other hormones, adrenaline and cortisol, interfered with sleep. Of course they interfere with sleep, they are fight or flight hormones.
Even though this study used women that were experiencing menopausal symptoms, it can be used in a broader spectrum. If you find that you are having trouble sleeping, start writing a food journal and review weekly. Make changes based on what you see in your journal.
Fruits are not considered part of the problem as the fiber in the fruit slows down the abosorption of sugar in the body. I wouldn’t advise eating a big bowl of fruit for dinner, but a serving is not going to be the same as refined carbs.
Before heading to the pharmacy aisle and sleep aids, take a few minutes to review the foods you eat before bed. You might be surprised at what lurks in your bloodstream before hitting the hay.
